Student Freedom Initiative (“SFI")

Accountable to the Technology Partner Manager for the execution of the HBCU Capacity Building component, including Information Technology (IT) infrastructure modernization, broadband, and other emerging technology initiatives that enable Minority Serving institutions (MSIs) to be more resilient and competitive.  As the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Ron provides subject matter expertise in policy, planning, technology, services, service verification, operations, cyber security, and risk management.  In this role, Ron will collaborate with participating HBCUs to ensure compliance with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 800-171 Rev 2, essential for the protection of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and other Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).  He will also support collaboration with technology partners in the development and implementation of a strategy to transition MSIs to broadband.

Ron has 22+ years’ experience in information technology planning, implementation, operations, security, and risk management.  Prior to joining Student Freedom Initiative, Ron served as the Director, Information Technology and Operations.  In this role he was responsible for defining strategy, technical standards, technical roadmaps, policies, and solutions to meet this strategy in alignment with the organization’s mission.  Ron provided technical and management oversight to transform legacy technology to cloud based platforms necessary to increase the resilience, reliability, security, and cost effectiveness of the Information Technology infrastructure of the organization.  Ron worked in partnership with Information Technology, business, security, and operations staff to ensure effective and efficient transition(s) to cloud based service(s) while maintaining a positive user experience.

Ron has a proven track record of developing and driving IT strategies to improve compliance with standards and deliver new IT services.  He is experienced in successfully managing teams and ensuring issue escalation and resolution, risk management, and the proper prioritization of tasks and projects to achieve objectives that support organizational strategies.  He has a comprehensive background in IT security management, including managing risks, IT security controls, policies, and procedures to promote IT governance, risk, and compliance with relevant recognized standards.

Ron received his Bachelor of Arts from University of Virginia and completed the following: ITIL Intermediate, Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), and is certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC) and ISO 20000.
