Turning Evidence into Opportunity

Supporting the Whole Student

The students participating in SFI’s programs offer an essential perspective on our work: what is helping them move forward, where they encounter challenges, and what additional support would help them achieve their goals.

We are putting those insights into action through the launch of the Student Freedom Scholars model. Building on the Student Freedom Loan and SFI’s broader programming, this model connects services around students’ needs to support their continued persistence and long-term success.

The approach reflects what we are learning through student feedback, direct engagement, and patterns in program use. Students’ needs evolve throughout their education. Connecting resources more closely allows us to respond to those needs and help students access relevant support along the way.

The Student Freedom Scholars model brings together:

  • Financial wellness education to strengthen financial knowledge, confidence, and planning.
  • Emergency resource pathways, including emergency and completion grants for eligible students, to help address financial gaps that could interrupt their education.
  • Community and belonging initiatives to strengthen connections to peers and supportive networks.
  • Borrower readiness training to support informed borrowing decisions and preparation for repayment.
  • The Career Outcomes Accelerator to provide career coaching and guidance as students prepare for professional opportunities.
  • Retention and persistence support to help students navigate challenges and continue toward graduation.

These services reinforce one another. Financial education can help a student plan ahead; timely emergency assistance can help protect that progress; and career preparation can connect academic achievement to opportunities after college. Bringing them together creates a more coordinated pathway through SFI’s support.

The SFL team’s increased engagement with students is part of this effort. Direct conversations help us understand individual circumstances, identify barriers, and connect students with resources that fit their goals. What students share also informs how we continue to refine the model.

For the donors and partners already investing in SFI’s mission, Student Freedom Scholars represents the next step in that shared commitment. Their support helps us build on existing programs and respond to what students tell us they need to thrive.

Supporting the whole student means listening, adapting, and staying focused on the future students envision. Through Student Freedom Scholars, we are bringing those commitments together to help students persist, graduate, and carry their progress into lasting career and financial success.

A Future in Flight, Made Possible

Crystal had a goal: complete her education and pursue a career as a professional pilot. But uncertainty about paying for college threatened to interrupt that path.

As a Student Freedom Loan participant, she gained the financing she needed to continue. That support helped her reach graduation—and changed her experience along the way. With less worry about whether she could afford to remain in school, Crystal could focus her attention on her studies and the future she was working toward.

Her message to donors is direct: their support has a real impact on students like her. Behind a contribution is someone gaining the opportunity to keep learning, complete a degree, and pursue an ambition that might otherwise have been placed on hold.

For Crystal, the impact also extends beyond her own education. Repayments through the Student Freedom Loan help support future generations of students. Knowing that her repayments will help someone else pursue their goals makes her feel good about being part of the program.

Her story brings that continuing cycle of opportunity to life: philanthropic support helps a student move forward, and that student’s repayments help make education possible for those who follow.

Watch Crystal share what the Student Freedom Loan meant for her—and why she wants supporters to understand the difference they are making.

Supporting Future Healthcare Professionals and the Communities They Serve

Students preparing for careers in healthcare invest years in their education. Yet even after earning admission to a professional program, their ability to continue depends on securing the resources to pay for it.

Changes to federal student lending policies are creating a new and urgent financing gap for graduate and professional students. For those whose educational costs exceed available funding, that gap can disrupt plans to enroll, continue their training, or complete a degree. Responding requires practical alternatives that account for students’ circumstances and long-term goals.

Student Freedom Initiative is prioritizing this challenge through its Graduate Student Freedom Loan pilot. The proposed pilot activity will work through an initial set of parter schools, with the goal of expanding to broader collaboration across all applicable partner institutions.

The priority reflects both an immediate educational need and a broader community concern. HBCUs play an important role in educating Black healthcare professionals. Protecting access to these educational pathways matters for the students pursuing them and for the future availability of skilled professionals.

A financing barrier facing an aspiring physician, dentist, pharmacist, or veterinarian can have consequences beyond that individual. It can interrupt the development of someone whose future work could expand access to care, address health disparities, or serve a community with too few providers.

The pilot is designed to provide an additional financing pathway that helps students continue toward those careers. Its potential value lies in connecting educational access with the skills and services communities need.

As a pilot, it will also create an opportunity to learn. Working with participating institutions, SFI will assess students’ needs and experiences to inform improvements and potential expansion. That evidence will help guide how the approach develops over time.

Institutional partnerships and philanthropic support are essential to this response. Together, they can help address an urgent gap while investing in a longer-term goal: enabling talented students to complete their training and contribute to the health and well-being of the communities they serve.

Help Expand Student Opportunity

Listening, learning, and responding are shared commitments. Students help us understand their needs, campus partners help connect them with resources, and philanthropic support helps make those resources available.

Your support helps SFI bring these efforts together so more students can continue their education and pursue their goals.
