Huston-Tillotson University Named Top Private HBCU in Texas

Ranks third after the State’s two public four-year institutions

Austin, Texas – September 13, 2024 – In a recent listing of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) Huston-Tillotson University (HT) was listed as the number 1 private HBCU in Texas by HBCU Colleges. HT, the first institution of higher education established in Austin, ranked third overall, trailing behind the state’s only two public HBCUs – Prairie View A&M University and Texas Southern University.

HT President Melva K. Wallace expressed her pride in the designation, stating that “this recognition underlines the dedication of the university’s faculty, staff, and students.” She emphasized that the accolade highlights the university’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and leadership within the historically Black college and university (HBCU) community.

“We continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in education, while remaining focused on social responsibility, sustainability, and student empowerment,” Wallace said. “Our mission drives us forward, as we continue to set new standards of academic excellence and social responsibility.”
